On April 16, 2010, Johan Stjernholm was officially awarded his title as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the field of Dance Studies.

Johan's thesis, entitled "Performativities, Virtualities, Abstractions, and Cunnigham's BIPED", explores the complex relations between dance movement, perception, and embodiment. Drawing on phenomenology, gender studies, and concepts of the virtual, the thesis reinvestigates the vitalist tradition of dance critique and contemporary performative practices.
